Most recently, I’ve been invited to teach at BYU-Idaho’s Education Week August 2-4th. As the date is fast approaching, I need to practice my presentations! I’ll be offering the following schedule as “practice classes” for me and to share with YOU using Facebook Live! Each class is one hour in length. Feel free to pass this invitation on to others as you feel to do so.
This week’s classes (given the 11th & 13th) are both new class material I’ve never taught in a group setting, so I’ll be offering both of these a second time this month (the 25th and 27th), to give me time to refine them. If you go to my Facebook page you’ll see my practice class from the 11th!
I’d love any comments of what you really connected with as well as what was maybe unclear. Your feedback would help me a lot as I’m getting ready, so please do tell me what you think (either here or over on Facebook) if you join me. Thanks so much!
Class Descriptions:
Class #1: Food Storage Planning & Organization
Dates: July 11th & July 25th, 7pm PDT
In this class I’ll be sharing my own personal experiences, understanding and LDS faith based perspective to explain WHY we need to prepare. We’ll introduce the areas I’ve learned to be most critical to a good food storage plan and I’ll also share how I organize my plan tangibly into three physical binders.
Class #2: Cooking with Food Storage
Dates: July 13th & July 27th, 7pm PDT
Let’s get cooking! In this class you’ll be taught how to turn simple ingredients you’re storing into meals your family will love! We’ll begin by discussing appetite fatigue and the importance of variety in your meal plan. Next, we’ll talk about the cooking tools I’ve personally used most and why you should consider including them too.
I’ll share five “lost art” cooking skills which make basic ingredients taste impressive:
Making bread
Fresh pasta
Homemade tortillas (both corn and flour)
Gnocchi
Homemade spaetzle
Finally, I’ll share with you some “Smart Ingredients” & “Smart Tips” you should know about.
Class #3: Powerless and Low–Fuel Cooking Options
Date: One Night Only~ July 18th, 7pm PDT
What methods should you know about in order to cook without electricity and limited fuel? Why does this piece of the puzzle determine either your success or failure? We’ll answer this critical question and explore my picks for the three BEST ways of cooking to conserve fuel: Solar Cooking, Retained Heat Cooking and Biomass Cooking. You may be a beginner, but you’ll come away from this class with a good understanding about various units available and how to use them.
Class #4: Retained Heat Cooking
Date: One Night Only~ July 20th, 7pm PDT
Retained heat cooking doesn’t get enough time and attention in the preparedness world and it’s something I love to teach about!
In this class, we’ll discuss the history of retained heat cooking, many modern approaches to it, as well as the underlying rules in cooking successfully using different units. We’ll also walk through seven recipes to better understand how retained heat cooking can be applied to familiar food preparations. Here are the “how to’s” we’ll be covering:
- Bread
- Muffins / brownies & cake
- Skillet “Casserole” Type Meals
- Crockpot type meals
- Yogurt
- Tamales
- Overnight Hot Cereal
