Adding a Wonder Oven to your Supplies: 4 ways

My Food Storage Cookbook is proud to offer 4 new options to acquire a Wonder Oven!

Through the years while offering patterns and promotions, I’ve sent out hundreds of patterns to those wanting to make them, while hearing from others wanting to know where to get one ready-made.  I’m now bringing you 4 options to get one for yourself!

Four Ways to Get Yourself a Wonder Oven

The biggest hurdle for the DIY’er has been finding the right sized beads to purchase.  I’ve blogged at length about the need for tiny (bebe) sized beads for best heat retention and most of the time those beads are hard to find.  For those who want to do it themselves, I’ve made arrangements with a supplier I trust to bring the beads directly to you!

For groups or even a few friends who want to get together for an order, there’s the appeal of saving money by buying in bulk and doing some of the work yourself.  At the same time, for those who just want to buy one already done, I’ve made arrangements through a friend of mine to offer completely finished sets as well.

I’m excited to bring these options to you!  For more specific information on each product and to order, just visit my shop.  All DIY options are built around the amount of beads (cartons) my supplier offers.  One carton is equal to 37 gallons of beads and each Wonder Oven set requires 10 gallons of beads. I’ve translated these quantities to the tables below in relation to this project.

Also, shipping (to all US locations, including Alaska) is included in all of the options you see here.  Shipping costs to Canada, while I’m happy to offer it, has a slight increase in shipping costs for the beads in Canadian currency.  I can still make it work, but please contact me directly by emailing me at myfoodstoragecookbook@hotmail.com.

Option #1:  For the true DIY’er, this option gives you the beads and a pattern along with sewing instructions.  After that, you’ll do the rest.  About 3 1/4 yards of 100% cotton (natural) fabric is needed to complete a single set of Wonder Oven pillows.  A “set” includes a large pillow (which is used on the bottom when cooking) along with a smaller pillow (which is used on top).

So, with one carton of beads (for example) you would need about 11 yards of fabric to completely use all the beads which would also include an extra single pillow to use the all the beads.  (As you can see with the first option, enough beads for an extra single pillow will be left over in this case.)

What would you do with an extra single pillow?  I use single pillows all the time to take items on picnics and keep things cold coming home from the store.  (Visit this post for more on that.)

# of Cartons Number of Wonder Oven Sets it can Make Calculated Price Per Set
1 3 1/2 Wonder Oven sets $22.50 per set, before fabric
2 7 Wonder Oven sets $15.78 per set, before fabric
3 11 Wonder Oven sets $15.36 per set, before fabric
4 15 Wonder Oven sets $13.93 per set, before fabric
5 18 Wonder Oven sets $13.83 per set, before fabric
6 22 Wonder Oven sets $13.22 per set, before fabric
7 26 Wonder Oven sets $12.61 per set, before fabric

Option #2:  Fabric pieces are already cut and sent to you ready to be sewn.  No need to shop for fabric or cut it out.  This option saves you nearly 40% (or more depending on quantity) per set as compared to buying a set already made, but you’re doing a good portion of the work to earn that savings.

Fabric is offered in a “prints and solids” coordinated pattern scheme. Pre-cut fabric pieces will be comprised of three solid colors and a coordinating print. You can choose to sew the fabric however you choose, but if you decide to pair the printed pieces with the solid pieces they will coordinate.  Shipping is included in the price.

For anyone who’s entirely new to the concept of Wonder Ovens, I’ll end with a clip preview from my new video on cooking with them.  While I never would have imagined having the privilege of offering them to you as I am now, they are (I believe) so essential to a prepared cooking plan that I’m committed to do everything in my power to get them out there.  I hope you’ll take a minute and consider adding a Wonder Oven to your supplies!

  1. Megan-

I came to your site from a link on the below page regarding Wonder Ovens:

    http://www.backdoorsurvival.com/slow-cooking-with-the-amazing-wonder-oven/

Towards the bottom she makes mention of Wonder Ovens vs Wonder Bags, and says that Wonder Bags are ‘a bust’. The author of that article doesn’t state what the difference is between a Wonder Oven or Wonder Bag is.

Are they the same thing? If so and the Bag is a bust then I’m curious about the Oven concept.

This Wonder Oven idea is very intriguing and I really want to try it out!

    1. Thanks for the question. The wonder bags Gaye tried are completely different than the wonder ovens I talk about and use here on my site. Here is a link to what she used. The difference in my opinion is that the bags are a one-piece unit and in that, you are to insert the pot, etc., whereas in using the “set” of pillows that I use (using a top and bottom pillow) the pot is more effectively insulated/ nested within the pillows. That is my guess, as I’ve never tried the wonder bag before. I’d also be interested in investigating what type of filler they use, as I don’t know that part of the equation either.

My experience with the wonder oven pillow sets I teach about, however, is that they are extremely effective in holding whatever temperatured item is nested within them, whether it be boiling, warm, cold or freezing. 12 hours is a minimum amount of time, but that is how long I’ve found these pillows to retain any of the temperatures listed above (so long as basic rules are followed, which I detailed in the post you referenced).
