Print the recipe card! easiest beef stew
I have a couple of beef stew recipes. This is the one I make when I don’t want to have to think about cooking or when I want to hand off making dinner to one of my kids [it’s that easy!]. It comes from the book “It’s in the Bag” (www.cedarfort.com). There’s nothing to it!
Prep time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
1 (12 oz.) can roast beef or 1 pint home-canned roast beef
2 (15 oz. cans whole potatoes, drained and quartered
1 (15 oz. can corn, drained
1 (15 oz.) can peas and carrots, drained (*I used just carrots here)
1 (12 oz.) jar savory beef gravy
1 can beef broth *optional — add it if you want a thinner consistency
In a resealable bag:
2 Tbs. dried onions
1 tsp. dried oregano
Bagged as a Pantry Meal:
Instructions:
In a large saucepan mix all ingredients. Warm over medium heat and serve.
In my book this recipe is used as a:
*Long Term Recipe
*3 month meal
*Pantry Meal

Would you say this book is worth the purchase? Have you used more than a few recipes out of it yet? I just dislike buying a book and finding you only like a few recipes out of it, I do like the concept of the book, but in this economy 20.00 on a book that isn’t worth it is not frugal.
I do think this one is worth it and I understand being frugal. Saving people from buying cookbooks for only a couple of good food storage recipes was a lot of the reason I started blogging. For the blog, I was only given permission to share five recipes from this book but there were a lot more that we tried and liked. These are the ones that I recommend trying:
Chicken Tetrazzini
Sun Dried Tomato Pasta
Beef and Barley Soup
Beef Stew
Clam Chowder
Shrimp Linguini
Swedish Beef over Rice
Roast Beef Dinner
Hot Ham Rolls
Orange Marmalade Rolls
Tropical Muffins
Blueberry Muffins
Spiced Muffins
I’d personally say it’s worth it because this was one of the rare books in which I didn’t run into a “bad” recipe while trying them out. Most books had at least a recipe or two that had to be thrown away they were so bad, but that never happened while trying recipes from this book.
You may want to check on the author’s blog for additional free recipes. On the book itself, I did find it for sale used here on Amazon for less. You probably do this too, but I usually wait until I have enough to purchase there to get free shipping since the shipping negates so much of the savings. Good luck!
I found the “It’s in the Bag” recipe, while yummy and easy, makes a hearty 8 servings. So, if you have a smaller family and don’t want a lot of leftovers, you might make some of the modifications I made:
One cup of freeze-dried roast beef reconstituted in a pint of beef broth (or a half-pint of home-canned beef with juices) **
One (15 oz) can of diced potatoes, reserve liquid
One (15 oz) can of mixed vegetables, reserve liquid
One packet of beef gravy mix, or 3 tbs of Tone’s brown gravy mix
Use the reserved liquid from the canned veg to adjust the thickness of your gravy. Makes 3 (big) – 4 (reg) servings.
** If you like it meaty, you can certainly use a 12 oz can of beef, or use a 7 oz can of corned beef since roast beef doesn’t seem to come in smaller cans
